Governor's Thoughts
Were, In Fact, With
The People of Clarence
At The Time of the Spill

Although the deletrium spill from the Harris Jones Factory unnerved residents, many took comfort the fact that the Governor went out of his way to assure citizens that his thoughts are, at this time, with the people of Clarence.

"My thoughts are with the people of Clarence at this time," said the Governor during a press conference that took place soon after the Spill.

A recent study of Gubernatorial Brain Activity by The Melone Institute of Research indicated that, although the Governor's Thoughts traveled widely in those months -- perhaps even as far as Wisconsin -- at the time he made the statement his thoughts were, largely, with the people of Clarence. Stray thoughts had ventured into such areas as dog food and internet pornography, but for the most part, his thoughts spent time as indicated. (continued on page 17)

Although people who live here in Clarence certainly won't have any problems remembering the Spill, author Anne Ursu thought that it was a story that deserved to be told in her very first book.

"I thought a larger audience should know about the spill, and its aftereffects," says Ursu, "I mean, it had such a profound effect on the town, but it got hardly any coverage in the national news. I don't know whether or not that's because the CEO's brother is also a vice president at Time Warner."

Ursu's book follows several fictional residents, ranging in age from students at Ventura Elementary to retirees at Sunny Shadows, through the events of the Spill and the months following. Their stories, Ursu claims, "are not the stories of any actual Clarence native, although some were inspired by people I've had conversations with."

When asked if any of the characters in Spilling Clarence were based on certain personalities around town, Ursu just smiles. "Officially, any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental," she winks, "but you'll have to judge for yourself."

"I didn't understand why everyone got so nervous. Free drugs for the whole town -- what could be better?" "It was nothing like the spill of '52 -- now that was a spill. " "I got to stay up much later because dad was too messed up to tell me to go to bed, so that was cool I guess." "I've had a headache ever since, and a stitch in my side, and a runny nose. Food doesn't sit right and I can't sleep at night." "It was great for business."
